The decline of the moralistic political forces led to the Betting and Gaming Act 1960 which legalized private casinos. The government set up its National Lottery in 1994.

Delaware, Nevada, and New Jersey became the first legal online gambling states in 2013, when each launched online casinos, poker sites, or both. Since then, only four other states have legalized online poker and gambling: Connecticut, Michigan, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia.
