Book Paintings

These small, hand-made books, are sold as diaries every calendar year, though I never use them for that purpose. Instead, inspired by their having been manufactured in the country (Czechoslovakia) where my parents were born and raised before fleeing Europe for America in 1937, I have filled each year’s edition with my paintings.

The blank pages of each book have become tiny “canvases” for some of my more personal paintings, including those influenced by my parents’ refugee experience when they left so many close family members behind, the majority of whom would subsequently perish in the Second World War.
